Drug Treatment Centers in Canada

Drug abuse is one of the most serious problems in today’s times. As it is, drug abuse has been one of the main reasons for the spread of HIV. As it is, sharing of needles, used to be a very common practice among drug addicts. This was a major contributor in the spread of HIV. As a result, many steps were taken, to address drug abuse. Many drug addict rehabilitation centers were set up to bring these people back into mainstream society.

The National Native Alcohol and Drug Abuse Program (NNADAP) is a major force to reckon with in the fight against drug abuse. It supports the largest number of residential drug treatment centers in Canada. It started up as an initiative of Health Canada, which is a federal department responsible for the health care system in the country. It manages, more than fifty treatment centers, with more than 650 in-patient treatment beds. These centers have been doing a tremendous job towards reducing the level of substance abuse among the people.

Along with this, more than a thousand addiction treatment centers have been set up in different parts of the country. They include inpatient treatment centers, outpatient treatment centers, family treatment centers, solvent abuse treatment centers and drug treatment centers serving the youth. These centers offer round the clock for providing treatment on a number of bases, such as day patient, out patient and in patient basis. For drug rehabilitation, both short-term and long-term residential care services are offered.

Alberta Alcohol and Drug Abuse Commission is another government agency, which offers prevention and treatment services to help drug addicts and their family members as well. It provides a range of treatment facilities to the patients, such as detoxification services, family programs, and follow-up programs.

Aventa is the only agency in Western Canada providing addiction treatment for women. It is located in Calgary and it provides treatment on both outpatient and residential basis.

These treatment centers, work on three main areas, i.e.  prevention, intervention, and aftercare. As part of prevention campaign, they conduct a number of public awareness campaigns, meetings, cultural, and spiritual events. Also, School-based drug rehabilitation programs are organized on a regular basis. Intervention activities like recreation activities for the youth, native cultural and social programs, and discussion groups are also conducted by these centers.

For the purpose of aftercare, the drug treatment centers in Canada provide counseling, case management, and crisis intervention. Apart from that, they also provide treatment referrals, detox referrals, social service referrals, and medical referrals. Outreach visits are also conducted.
